Moravian Ornament Gallery: Exhibition at Czech Center Seoul
Moravian Glory NGO (visit the website in Czech) assembled a team of folk artists who created a unique mosaic of decorative paintings representing specific regions in South Moravia, Czech Republic, with their signature styles.
Women and men from five parts of Moravian Slovakia painted large paintings that form an educational trail through Moravia.
In 2024, the Moravian Ornament Gallery travel exhibition will be displayed at the Czech Center Seoul, South Korea to introduce visitors to this colorful Moravian tradition.
The ethnographic region of Slovácko is an immensely varied landscape full of colorful costumes, songs, and ornamental paintings. It is divided into several smaller folklore sub-regions.
The Moravian Glory Foundation works toward the preservation of folk ornamental paintings, mainly from the Podluží region, and provides workshops about the decorative painting technique and rules.
Moravian Ornament Gallery Origin
To preserve and teach this ancient tradition, a unique project, the Moravian Ornament Gallery was created in 2022, in cooperation with the National Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA. The goal is to demonstrate the diversity of the sub-regions and their ornamental designs. Each beautiful design, full of apples, tulips, snails, and birds, has its own rules, colors, and unique shapes. A layman does not recognize this at first glance, and unfortunately, undesirable imitations are created, mixing in regions from the Czech Republic and elsewhere. With the help of folk painters, our Foundation monitors adherence to the rules and educates the public.
The exhibition consists of a collection of nineteen ornamental paintings created by seventeen folk painters, two of them male, from five Moravian Slovakia regions:
- Podluží
- Kyjovské Dolňácko
- Strážnické Dolňácko
- Uherskohradišťské Dolňácko
- Horňácko
(The number of paintings to loan can be discussed.)
The traditional ornamental designs differ according to the painters' native region and their style. The exhibition is complemented by a map of Moravian Slovakia to help viewers match each design with the correct location and to teach them to identify different Moravian regions.
Travel exhibit – for loan
We have sent the originals of the large-scale paintings to America to create an imaginary walk through Moravian villages, where one can see painted wine cellars, houses with decorated fronts, and shrines. Thanks to the copies of the paintings in the traveling exhibition, more people can learn about the Moravian Slovakia ornamental paintings.
The traveling exhibition – Moravian Ornament Gallery – can be loaned for folklore events, festivals, hody...
